Obituary for Edward N. Richards

Edward N. Richards, 80, died peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2019 at his Concord home, with family at his side. He was the loving husband for 39 years of Nicolina “Nicki” (Morina) Richards.

He was born in Pennsylvania on September 16, 1938, as the son of the late Norman and Ann (Joyce) Richards. Ed grew up in Syracuse, attended Most Holy Rosary High School and LeMoyne College. He later received a double Master’s degrees in Physics and Philosophy of Science from Boston College, and enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of Ottawa.

For over forty years, Ed was employed as a Senior Research Scientist at Boston College’s Institute for Scientific Research, previously known as Space Data Research. He retired in 2008.

He was an avid reader, and cherished long walks while enjoying the beautiful scenery of local woods. Ed will be remembered for his keen intellect and scientific mind, with a particular interest in philosophy and theology. He had a contagious smile, and enjoyed his children and grandchildren immensely.

In addition to his wife, Ed leaves behind three children, Andrea (Dan) Smith of Dobbs Ferry, NY, Melissa (Jeremy) McNeill-Phillips of Randolph, and Thomas (Aryn) Richards of London, two grandchildren, Noemi and Ty Smith, his sisters, Nancy (Emil) Rossi of Syracuse, NY and Margaret “Peg” (Robert) Wallace of Londonderry, NH, one brother, John Richards (Diane) of Clay, NY, and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was also the brother of the late Kathleen “Kathy” White and her late husband Dick.

Family and friends will gather for visiting hours on Friday, March 8th from 4 to 7 pm in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. His funeral will take place on Saturday, March 9th at 9 am from the Dee Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 am in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center. Burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Syracuse, NY will be at a later date.
