Obituary

Zoltan B. Tuba, age 88, formerly of Sherman, CT, beloved husband of Joy Segala Tuba, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 15, 2019. Zoltan was born in Fairfield, CT, on June 23, 1930, son of the late Joseph and Barbara Konja Tuba. Zoltan attended the University of Connecticut where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He made a life-long career out of his first job after college as an engineer for Empire Manufacturing Corp. in Bridgeport, CT, making precision machine parts for the aircraft/aerospace industry. He quickly earned the position of General Manager and eventually assumed full ownership of the company. Zoltan worked 57 years at Empire before retiring at age 78. He was well-respected in the community, serving on the boards of St. Vincent's Hospital and Lafayette Bank and Trust, as well as supporting many local charities. Zol enjoyed playing golf and was a longtime member of Mill River Country Club and The Patterson Club. He was fortunate to score not one, but two holes-in-one in his lifetime. Zol enjoyed many tropical vacations with his wife and close friends. Golf and dancing were usually a big part of these excursions. One of his favorite trips was on a chartered windjammer sailboat cruise in the Caribbean with three other couples who were dear friends. The crew prepared gourmet meals with local ingredients and served fine wine or champagne after working the sails in their bathing suits all day. Zol was also an avid follower and benefactor of UConn basketball. He enjoyed attending many games with his friends and fellow UConn supporters. Zol loved to entertain his friends and clients with countless restaurant dinners along with fun-filled trips to see the Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets for which he held season tickets. Zol was very generous of his time and resources to his family and friends. Despite his success, he remained a humble man and did not want credit for his kindness but preferred to stay in the background. Zol loved spending time with his family year-round at his lake property in Sherman. Every summer, he and his daughter would transform the quiet property to entertain 50+ guests for the weekend. "Camp Tuba", as it was called, brought an enormous amount of joy to Zol every year. He loved sharing this magical property with everyone and welcomed the scattered array of tents, the controlled chaos, the loud music, the smiles and laughing heard from all that were in attendance. One of his favorite pastimes was driving his pontoon boat loaded with kids and adults alike, giving them a tour of Candlewood Lake with all of its glory and history. This summer tradition remarkably carried on for 37 years and created life-long memories for his grandchildren and countless others. In his retirement years, Zol loved puttering around the property and fixing things that needed attention. He often took his 1952 Ford tractor out for a ride. The tractor came with the purchase of the property and was in rough shape. Zol of course tinkered with it and got it running again, then used it to work the property cutting the massive lawn by the cottages or blowing leaves off his long driveway. He always had a knack for fixing things. In his youth, he was fascinated by taking things apart and putting them back together to see how they worked. Zol's mechanical curiosity carried him full circle to a life-long career that gave him great satisfaction and success. May he rest in peace. In addition to Joy, his wife of 66 years, he leaves behind his son, Geoffrey Tuba, his daughter, Jennifer Tuba Peyton and her husband James, his grandchildren Tyler and Kelsey Peyton, his nieces Barbara Tuba, Donna Winters, Jeanne McClear, Judy Horvath, Karen Beardsworth and Erica Riley, nephews Charlie, Louie and Michael Horvath, James and Michael Segala, brother-in-law Chester Segala and his wife Dolores, and sister-in-law Patricia Tuba. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Elsie Faustine, brothers Andrew, Joseph, Gus and Albert Tuba, and nephews William, Thomas and Daniel Tuba.
