Woodley Llewellyn Chapman, age 86, of Concord, MA died January 27, 2021, from complications of Alzheimer's and COVID.
Born on July 19, 1934 in New Bedford, MA, he was the son of the late John and Hazel (Young) Chapman. He was a graduate of Newton High School in Newton, MA and Harvard University class of 1956. Woody also completed graduate work at Columbia University. He served as a Clerk at the Pentagon during his two years of Army service.
Woody was co-owner of Cambridge restaurants Ferdinand's, Ha'Penny Pub, Blue Parrot, Idler, Idler's Back Room, The Peacock, and Tapas. His professional career also included investing in real estate in Cambridge and Somerville.
Woody extended his generosity to family, friends, and varied causes. He strongly believed in the value of education, putting many through school and contributing to Meharry Medical College and other just causes. He loved animals, travel, and kayaking. Woody had a quick wit that he also shared generously, always ready with a quip. He had a soft spot for children, reliably delighting them with a special trick or wind-up toy.
Predeceased by first wife Catherine Weeks Chapman and son Woodley L. Chapman, Jr., Woody is much loved and survived by his wife Mary Eshleman Chapman of Concord, MA, stepdaughter Pamela Simos and her husband Mark Simos of Watertown, MA, stepson Will Hogan and his wife Kalyani Subramaniam of Montclair, NJ, stepson Greg Hogan and his partner Angelina Beaslin of Salt Lake City, UT, granddaughter Catherine Mesquita and her husband Doug Mesquita of Medford, MA, granddaughter Elena Chapman of Medford, MA, granddaughter Tricia Chapman and her partner Casey Antocci of Flowermound, TX, and by step grandchildren Liam and Tara Hogan of Montclair, NJ, and great-grandchildren Aliyah Marie, Julian Woodley, and Natalia Maria Mesquita of Medford, MA.
A private burial will take place at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Concord in the near future. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at a later date.
