Obituary

Walter Wilson Sumner, Jr was born November 11, 1926 in Glens Falls, New York. He died January 5, 2020 at the age of 93. He was the son of Alice (Robinson) and Walter Sumner. He and his older sister Shirley, who passed four years ago also at the age of 93, lost their mother when he was six years old. Wilson moved to the Albany area very young and graduated from Albany High School. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he graduated from Siena College. While in high school, Wilson learned to play the bells at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Albany. He played the bells weekly before and after his military service. He married his high school sweetheart, Cherry, in 1949 while attending Siena. Wilson started working for the State of New York where he held several administrative positions in various departments, the last and longest in the Civil Service Department. Wilson was also a past president of the Aurania Club of Albany where he and Cherry made many and long-lasting friends. After many happy years in Guilderland, NY and Clearwater, Florida and then in the Avila in Albany, Wilson moved in 2017, two years after Cherry's death, to the Commons in Lincoln, Massachusetts. He was welcomed there by many including` a bridge group after a "trial" game. When asked if he was accepted and how he did, he said, "I think so, I won". He went on to start up a second group in the assisted living area. Wilson is survived by his immediate family, three loved children: Susan Sumner Stengrevics (John), Steven Wilson Sumner (Vicki), Bruce Allen Sumner (Ellen). Eight beloved grandchildren: Lauren Sumner Mattens (Anthony), Alex Stengrevics, Brooke Sumner, Blaire Sumner, Kaitlin Sumner, Eric Stengrevics, Krista Stengrevics, Michelle Sumner and one great grand-daughter, Amelia Mattens. Through his life Wilson dearly loved his family and friends. His passions included piano, bridge, dancing all of which he was a master at and perhaps a martini or two. Interment with military honors will be at a later date in Glens Falls, New York.
