William J. Talbot, 90, of Beverly, died Wednesday October 13, 2010 at the ENR Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth (Davis) Clark Talbot.
Born in Beverly on August 18, 1920 he was the son of the late Joseph and Olivine (Morneau) Talbot. He was a graduate of Beverly High School.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theatre on the USS Yorktown, nicknamed "The Fighting Lady". The Yorktown was the first carrier at the Battle of Midway as part of Task Force 58. He fought in 13 battles aboard the ship and was awarded several medals including the Presidential Citation Award. Mr. Talbot would later receive a plank from the Yorktown for being a member of the original crew of the ship out of Norfolk, Virginia.
Following his military service, he returned to Beverly where he owned and operated a decorating and renovations business. He was well known in the Beverly area as a craftsman and artisan in his field.
He later owned and operated Goodwin's Store in the center of Beverly, and retired after almost 20 years of work as the building and renovation supervisor at Gordon College in Beverly.
During his retirement years he opened his own antique store in Beverly.
An avid sailor, he was a member of the Jubilee Yacht Club in Beverly.
He was the loving father of Dianne E. Simmons and her husband Alan of Hyannis, Sandra T. Thompson and her husband Peter of Freeport, Maine, Peter G. Talbot of Danvers, and Martha S. Talbot and her husband Russell Dion of Carlisle, and is also survived by 8 grandchildren.
Funeral will be held Monday October 18th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 10:30 am followed by a funeral Mass in V.A. Hospital Chapel, 200 Springs Road, Bedford at 11:30 am.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday October 17th from 5 to 7 pm.
Private interment will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
