Obituary

William Milsom Summers of Grafton, NH and Bradenton, FL, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2015, in Concord, MA, surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born in Boston, MA in 1931, and he was a US Army Korean War veteran. "Coach" Bill graduated from Springfield College, and pursued his lifelong goal of teaching with positions as squash and tennis coach at the University of Pittsburgh, and Director of Racquet Sports at Princeton University. Bill's squash team at Princeton won the Ivy/National Team Championship, and he was runner-up Coach of the Year in 1974. Bill was cofounder of the Central New Jersey Squash Racquet Association, and received the Presidents Award for two years. He cofounded the Northern New Jersey Squash Racquet Association. From 1986 to 1993, Bill was head squash coach at Tufts University. In the summer Bill was tennis professional at many clubs including Watertown Tennis Club, Watertown, CT, Sherwood Park Tennis Club, Greensboro, NC, Orienta Beach Club in Mamaroneck, NY, and Longwood Cricket Club, Chestnut Hill, MA. He was head tennis pro at Somerset Racquet Club in Somerset, NJ where his mixed doubles team won the Lipton Mixed Doubles championships. Bill was also tennis pro at Gramacy Racquet Club in New York City, where he coached Walter Cronkite, and was head pro at Murray Hill Racquet Club in Murray Hill, NJ. Bill took up golf after his tennis and squash coaching career. He mastered the game, and in the tradition of a coach, he taught many others the game. Bill was the second of five boys born to John Lionel Summers of Midsomer Norton, England, and Wilhelmina "Billie" (Clark) of Bathurst NSW, Australia, who predecease him as does his brother David. He is survived by his very beloved wife of sixty-one years, Faith (Bourne). Bill and Faith were inseparable. Brothers John (Marty), Charles (Tess), and Frank Summers, survive him, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins in the US, UK and Australia, all who loved him dearly. A memorial service for Bill will be held on Saturday, May 23rd at 11 AM in the Dublin Community Church, 1125 Main Street, Dublin, New Hampshire.
