William H. Smith, Jr., 85, of Maynard, formerly of Concord, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at his Maynard home. He was the beloved husband of Erma L. (Stone) Smith.
Born in Boston on October 9, 1924 he was the son of the late William H. Smith Sr. and Rosanna (St. Michel) Smith. He attended Brighton public schools and graduated from Brighton High School in 1943.
During World War II, he served as a Combat Infantryman in the U. S . Army. He made two combat jumps into Normandy and Holland. He fought in The Battle of the Bulge and was the recipient of the Bronze Star.
For 18 years, prior to his retirement in 1987, he worked for Duracell Battery Company in Needham. Previously he worked as a technician at Nuclear Metals in Concord and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.
A Concord resident from 1958 until 1994, Mr. Smith was a Life Member of the Concord Lodge of Elks and Past Exalted Ruler, a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, David R. Woodin Post, Concord and a Life Member of the Maynard American Legion.
In addition to his wife, Erma, he is survived by 2 sons, William E. Smith and his wife Erika, of St. Charles, Missouri, Phillip C. Smith of Boxborough, 2 daughters , Louise A. Smith of Clearwater, Florida and Janice M. Smith of Concord, 1 granddaughter, Hannah M. Cooper of Shirley, 1 sister, Eleanor Carbonaro of West Roxbury and many niece and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Rosemarie Cote, Rita B. Geary and Lorraine Brooks.
Concord's town flag will be flown at half staff on Saturday in recognition of Mr Smith's service to his country during World War II.

Cemetery:
Burial will be in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord where officers of the U. S. Army will present military honors.

Funeral will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 10 a.m. in theWest Concord Union Church, 1317 Main Street, Concord.
