Obituary

William E. Ritchie, 87, of Concord died Saturday April 23, 2016 in Cambridge. He was the beloved husband of 55 years of Margaret L. (McBreen) Ritchie. Born in Haverhill on January 23, 1929 he was the son of the late Raymond B. and Elizabeth A. (McCaugey) Ritchie. He was a 1946 graduate of St. James High School in Haverhill. Mr. Ritchie was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving from 1948 until 1952. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal, 3 Stars and the Navy Occupation Medal for his service as a Class A Yeoman aboard the USS Rochester. Following his military service, he graduated from University of Massachusetts in Amherst in1957 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. In college he was elected to the National Honor Society. He retired in 1988 after 25 years of employment as a chemical engineer with the American Sugar Co. (Domino Sugar Co.) in Charlestown. He had previously been employed for 3 years at Arthur D. Little Co. in Cambridge, MA and Santa Monica, CA, and for 3 years at Stone & Webster in Boston. Later he was employed as a Real Estate agent for 6 years with Caldwell Banker in Concord. For many years he was an active volunteer for the Concord Council on Aging, serving the Council as bus driver, videographer, publisher and member of the Board. He was a Past Grand Knight and Life Member of the Concord Knights of Columbus Council #287, and also a member of the James J. Mansfield American Legion Post in Concord. He was the father of Elizabeth A. Hill and her partner Bob Harrison of Plainville, William J. Ritchie and his wife Linda of Andover , Thomas H. Ritchie and his wife Debra of Darien, CT., and the late Daniel Ritchie. Grandfather of Shaun Hill and his wife Lorri, Ryan Hill and his wife Rachel, Leanne Hill, Alexandra, Patrick, Cameron and Caroline Ritchie and Bridget, Jack and David Ritchie. Great grandfather of Abigail and Annabella Hill and brother of Mary Ritchie of North Andover and the late Lawrence, John, Robert, Joseph and Rev. Francis Ritchie. Funeral will be held Tuesday April 26th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford St., CONCORD CENTER at 9 am followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center at 10 am. Interment with military honors will follow in the family burial plot in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord. Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be on Monday April 25th from 4 to 8 pm. Donations in his memory may be made to Town of Concord, Council on Aging, (memo: COA Gift Account), 1276 Main St., Concord, MA 01742 (www.concordnet.org). Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff on Tuesday April 26th in recognition of Mr. Ritchie's service to his country during the Korean Conflict.

Funeral will be held Tuesday April 26th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford St., CONCORD CENTER at 9 am followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center at 10 am. Interment with military honors will follow in the family burial plot in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Concord.
