Obituary

William Norman Hayes, 79 , of Acton formerly of Concord, retired Acton Police Officer, died Wednesday June 30, 2010 at his Acton home. He was the beloved husband of the late Catherine Maria (Mulligan) Hayes who died in 2000. Born in Concord on March 14, 1931, he attended Harvey Wheeler School in West Concord and was a 1953 graduate of Concord High School where he was active on the football team, and in the band and orchestra. He later attended Stockbridge School of Agriculture in Amherst, and worked for seven years in the family owned and operated Concord Garnett Mill, located on Commonwealth Avenue in West Concord. He joined the Acton Police Department in April of 1965 and retired as a patrolman in 1996. He was a graduate of Massachusetts State Police Academy in Framingham. He has resided in Acton since his marriage in 1964. Mr. Hayes enjoyed bluegrass music and reading Civil War history. He also had a passion for Lionel Trains, and was a lover of the outdoors, especially camping and fishing in New England and Alaska. During his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Kay throughout the United States and the islands. Survivors include his two sons, William N. Hayes Jr. of Plympton and Gerald E. Hayes of Olympia, Washington, two daughters, Maura E. Hayes of Casselberry, Florida and Martha C. Potter of Harwich, four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Emily Hayes, both of Plympton and Caelan and Colin Potter, both of Harwich, three nephews, Timothy Hayes of Stow, Mark Hayes of Pepperell and Kevin Hayes of Florida and a niece Kathy Phlordis of Burlington. A funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday July 16th at 10 am in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 89 Arlington Street, West Acton. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Children\'s Hospital Trust, 1 Autumn Street, #731, Boston, MA 02215. Arrangements were under the care of Charles W. Dee and Susan M. Dee, Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
