William Richard "Will" Gluck, talented composer and musician, beloved brother, son and friend, released his spirit on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 in Lincoln, MA following a ten-year battle with glioblastoma. He was 40 years old.
Will graduated from Concord Carlisle High School in 2000. He earned a BA in Music from Bates College in Lewiston, ME.
Throughout his fierce and courageous battle with glioblastoma, Will never wavered in his determination to lead a full, productive, and successful life. Passionate about his musical talent, he earned an MFA in Sound at Mills College in Oakland, CA in 2015, even while undergoing difficult chemotherapy treatments, and an MA in Music Composition, also at Mills, in 2016. Earlier, he studied Sound Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
A gifted musician who excelled at guitar, piano, pipe organ, electronic and other musical media, Will based his music practice in Oakland, CA. In 2015, Gluck's 8 channel surround sound electronic composition, "Metastatic Dandelions" won the Margaret Lyons Music Prize for Excellence in Composition at Mills. He subsequently performed at the Institute for Deep Listening at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, and collaborated on music projects in Palo Alto and Palm Springs. Will was a 2018 Artist in Residence at ACRE in Wisconsin, where he pursued acoustic and multi-track songs for his yet-to-be released album. His electronic composition, "For Emily Dickinson" was performed on his behalf at the Center for New Music in San Francisco on May 8, 2022.
Will loved skiing. At a young age, he enjoyed practicing challenging freestyle moves flying high on the trampoline fully outfitted in boots and skis; he relished a summer of training at an elite free-style camp at Whistler Mountain in B.C., Canada.
Will is survived by his parents, Arlene and William Gluck of Groton (formerly of Concord, MA); by his sister Johanna "Josie" Gluck and brother-in-law Michael Schunke of West Grove, PA; by his sister Katherine "Katie" Gluck and brother-in-law David Finney and adoring niece Anna Finney of Essex, MA; his honorary sister Brooke Alkon of Boston, MA; and his very dear, supportive friends: Caitlin Dube of Arlington, MA, John Agraz of Oakland CA, and Marion Anderson of Seattle, WA. Will's humorous, loving and adventurous spirit will perpetuate through his family and his magnificent collection of cherished friends.
In his final earthly gesture of generosity, humanity, and desire to challenge his disease, he donated his brain to the Harvard Brain Bank to support Glioblastoma Brain Cancer Research.
While we will always feel his presence with us, his music, insight, intelligence, and stunningly hilarious sense of humor will be missed. We could not admire him more and we will love him forever.
A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 705 Hale St., Beverly, MA at 11:00 am on Friday, August 5, 2022. Following the service, an outdoor/picnic luncheon will be offered at the home of the Finneys, Essex, MA, to celebrate Will's life with memories, conversation, and music. Please bring a picnic blanket, chairs; musical instruments welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be welcomed by
