Obituary

William J. Dolan, 84, of Concord, MA, and more recently of Wells, ME, died Thursday, December 18, 2014 at his home. He was the beloved husband for 58 years of Synia C. (Bartkus) Dolan. Born in Concord on January 30, 1930 he was the son of the late Col. John C. Dolan and Catherine F. (Powers) Dolan. He attended Concord Public Schools, graduated in 1948 from Concord High School and received a Bachelor Degree from Boston College in 1956. During the Korean Conflict he served as a Sergeant in the U. S. Army and lead the Yankee Division Marching Band at Ft. Devens, MA. For many years, prior to his retirement in 1997, Mr. Dolan was the Director of Finance at New England Deaconess Association in Concord. Previously, he was the Business Manager for the Concord Public Schools. A Concord resident for eighty-two years, he was a longtime Communicant and Lay Minister for St. Bernard's Church at Holy Family Parish where he taught and was Principal of Religious Education. A dedicated community participant, he served as Captain and Drum Major of the Concord Minutemen and was instrumental in the establishment of its Fife and Drum Corps. He was in the Concord Band, coached Little League and served on numerous town communities with particular pride in his involvement in the Celebrations and Parade Committees. In addition to his wife, Synia, he is survived by his daughter, Jenifer D. Kingston, and her husband, J. Steven, of Kennebunkport, ME and his son, William J. Dolan, Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL, his grandchildren, Colby, Shae and Piper Kingston. He was also the brother of the late Gen. John C. Dolan, Jr. and leaves John's family, as well as cousins, James, Kathleen, Martin, and the late Johnny Powers. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 23rd from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 9 am followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish at St. Bernard's Church, Monument Square, Concord Center at 10 am. Celebrant of the Mass will be the Rev. Austin H. Fleming. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord where Fr. Fleming will read the committal prayers and officers of the U. S. Army will present military honors. Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be held on Monday, December 22nd from 4 to 8 pm. Contributions in his memory may be made to Massachusetts General Hospital with special reference to The Research of Dr. Jeffrey Barnes. Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff on Tuesday in recognition of Mr. Dolan's service to his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
