William R. Doherty, 87, of Lincoln, owner and operator of Dohertys Garage in Lincoln, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 in Greenville, Rhode Island. He was the beloved husband of the late Phyllis M. (Lorman) Doherty who died on August 14, 2010.
Born in Waltham on March 25, 1923 he was the son of the late Matthew H. and Elizabeth (Hunter) Doherty. He attended Lincoln public schools, graduated from Concord High School in 1942, and attended Newton Automotive Trade School.
During World War II, he served as a Corporal in the U. S. Army, European Theatre of Operations and was a Prisoner of War.
From 1945 to present, Mr. Doherty was the owner and operator of Dohertys Garage in Lincoln.
For many years, prior to his retirement, he was the Deputy Fire Chief, Lincoln Fire Department.
A Lifelong Lincoln resident, he was a member of the American Ex-POWs, Mass Chapter, #1, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Lincoln Grange.
He was the devoted father of three daughters, Andrea L. Dwyer and her husband Tom of Newport, RI, Cynthia J. Murphy and her husband Dennis of Concord, and Sheryl J. Hagenian of Lincoln and proud grandfather of seven grandchildren;Christine (Dwyer) August, Kimberly Dwyer, Robert and Katelyn Murphy, Nicholas, Stephen and William Hagenian.He was the also the brother-in-law of Frances Tiffany of Sun City, AZ andCarolyn Lorman of Newport, VT.
He was also the brother of the late James H. Doherty of Green Village, New Jersey.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 29that 11 AM in the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 53 Cochituate Road, Wayland.
