William I. Barton of Concord died at his home Jan.15th 2014 after a short illness. His beloved wife, Katherine Doran Barton predeceased him January 31, 2005. Both Katy and Bill were born in Amherst, MA where they graduated from Amherst High School in 1936. Bill was a Veteran of World War II. Prior to the war he attended and graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine. He was the first Bowdoin student to be drafted. He served in the U.S.14th Calvary as a radio operator and translator in the European theatre, including the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he entered Harvard University School of Design as an architecture student. Bill worked for several large architectural offices in the Boston area before establishing his own practice first in Cambridge and then in Concord. In addition to his architectural work Bill was a highly respected designer of audio components, particularly electro-static speakers by KLH, Acoustic Research and Janszen design. Bill served on several Concord town committees over the years and was deeply committed to conservation and especially the cleaning up of the Concord River. Katie and Bill were married for nearly 62 years and were especially committed to the educational programs in the community as well as to the arts. Katie was teacher and department chair at Lincoln Sudbury Regional H.S. for nearly 40 years. She was a painter and loved playing the piano. The Bartons were particularly devoted to classical music and to the ballet. Bill is survived by his loving sister, Thyrza White of Cortez, Florida, a number of nieces and nephews, and his friends Michael and Marie Talbot of Harvard. Service: The Bartons requested no service.
