Obituary

Virginia Wing, of Cambridge, Mass., age 94, retired director of the Winsor School of Boston, passed away peacefully on Feb. 5, 2018. She was the beloved daughter of the late Rev. Charles A. and Katherine L. Wing. She was born May 14, 1923, in Springfield, Mass. She spent much of her childhood in Denver, where she attended the Kent School for Girls. Coming east to Smith College, she earned her A.B. in philosophy and left her mark as president of both its student council and athletics association. When she returned to Kent to teach English after college, seniors dedicated their yearbook to her, citing her "justice, honesty, wisdom, and understanding." Those same qualities would forever distinguish her leadership. She served Winsor from 1952 to 1988, including 25 years as director of the renowned girls' school. Described by one peer as "the archetypal school head," she presided over two national associations of principals. Across three decades of retirement, she remained an influential leader in the field of education, and she generously shared her insights as a trustee of the Chestnut Hill School, Derby Academy, Epiphany Preparatory School, Roxbury Latin School, and Tenacre School. She also served on the Board of Counselors of Smith, where she had worked early in her career as associate director of admission. In 1989, she was awarded the Smith College Medal, honoring Smith graduates whose lives and work exemplify "the true purpose of a liberal arts education." Winsor has honored her legacy in many ways; her name graces its Virginia Wing Library as well as its annual faculty enrichment program, lecture series, and outstanding teaching award. At Winsor's Centennial in 1986, Miss Wing reflected, "One of the strengths of this school is that while there have been vital changes over the years, we have not lost sight of Miss Winsor's original goal." For generations of alumnae, she embodied Winsor's values of high academic standards, unwavering integrity, an abiding sense of community, and a belief in the power of girls' education. In the spring, a celebration of her life will be held at the Winsor School. A private committal service will be held at a later date. If friends wish, they may make memorial gifts to Smith College Scholarship Fund, Northampton, MA 01063 or to The Winsor School, Attn: Virginia Wing Memorial Scholarship Fund, Pilgrim Road, Boston, MA 02215.
