Obituary

Tryntje Auer Hawks, of Concord, MA, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2018. Tryntje, known as Trynie to her friends and Dama to her grandchildren, was born on June 8, 1921 in Ithaca, NY to Dr. Johannes Abraham Christoffel Auer and Johanna Snijder Auer. Her parents moved to the United States from Holland so that her father could pursue an education in philosophy and theology, ultimately becoming a professor at the Harvard Divinity School. The first years of Trynie's life were spent in Concord, MA, while her father, in addition to teaching, was the minister of the First Parish Church of Concord. The family moved to Belmont, MA where she graduated from Belmont High School in 1939 and then the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1943. In 1941, while attending Harvard Summer School, Trynie met her future husband, James D. Hawks. They corresponded for years while both were in college and then during Jim's enlistment in the Naval Air Corp. After graduating from UNC, Trynie worked for the American Red Cross in Boston. Realizing her passion was working with people in need, she enrolled at Simmons Graduate School for Social Work. In 1947, Trynie and Jim got married and settled in Concord, MA raising their three children. She continued working for the Red Cross and in 1970 she began a career in real estate until retiring in the 90's. In addition to her career in social work and real estate, Trynie was on the board at Gould Farm, a residential and therapeutic community in Monterey, MA and The Home for the Aged in Concord, MA. She was a long-time member of the Concord Garden Club, the Concord Country Club and First Parish Church of Concord. Trynie was loved by many for her keen sense of humor, never missing a beat or hesitating to speak her mind. As her health started to fail last week, she was asked by one of her kids why she was slurring her words…her quick response was "I have had too many martinis." She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim, and her brother, Wim Auer. She leaves behind her three children, Deborah Kelley (Bill) of Milton, MA, Sukie Vaughan of Nashville, TN and Jim Hawks (Shelley) of Concord, MA. In addition, she leaves behind her grand-children, Katrina Kelley, Will Kelley(Ali), Emily Vaughan, James Vaughan, Sam Hawks and Johnny Hawks and one great grandchild, Austin Kelley. She also leaves behind her sister, Johanna Osborn and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Rivercrest and Newbury Court for their incredible care and for allowing Trynie to continue to think she was the "boss". In lieu of flowers please consider donations to The First Parish Church of Concord, MA, The Concord Home for the Aged or Gould Farm in Monterey, MA. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 11am to 1pm at The First Parish Church in Concord. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
