Thora Ruth (Haysey) Stukas, 94, formerly of Westwood, MA and Plymouth, MA, passed away peacefully at St. Camillus Health Center in Whitinsville, MA on October 16, 2017.
Born in New York City on April 25, 1923, Thora was raised in Concord, MA and graduated from Concord High School in 1941. She attended Radcliffe College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a Romance Language major and awarded the modern language prize upon her graduation in 1945.
Diverted by WWII from her objective of further language study abroad, she put to use money from the language award and a fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation to enroll in the Harvard/Radcliffe Program in Business Administration. She applied that training first as Personnel Manager at Brigham's, Inc., and then in the academic administrations of Mount Ida College and the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Later she served as Director of Admissions and Registrar at the Harvard School of Public Health, and as Registrar of Wheaton College, from which she retired in 1988.
Blessed with an admirable intellectual curiosity and an insatiable lifelong appetite for learning, Thora was also an adventurous traveler, avid reader, and talented pianist. She had a consuming interest in genealogical research, and a passion for cooking cultivated by generations of women in her family, much to the delight of appreciative family and friends.
Thora was the devotedly inseparable daughter of her beloved mother, Anna Jorgensen (Johnson) Haysey. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 40 years, Ernest J. Stukas, and is survived by the family she cherished: her two children, John Stukas of Central Falls, RI and Martha Phillips and husband Rod Phillips of Hopkinton, MA; three grandchildren, Catherine Phillips of Los Angeles, CA, Jonathan Phillips of Hopkinton, MA, and Emily Holubesko and husband Michael Holubesko of Cotuit, MA; and one great-grandchild, Michael Holubesko of Cotuit, MA.
