Obituary

Thomas Allen Jones, 77, of Chelmsford, MA, beloved husband and best friend of Suzanne (Wearly) Jones for 45 years, passed away on March 29, 2013 due to complications following surgery. Tom was born in Covington, KY on May 9, 1935 to Harmon and Myrtle Jones. He worked hard on the family farm, tending tobacco fields and raising sheep and cattle. After graduating from Crittenden High School, he attended Transylvania University where he earned his BA in Drama, Speech and English. Throughout school, he spent hours each day recording his voice and listening to tapes in order to perfect his broadcasting accent. This work paid off when he landed his first radio gig in Paris, KY where he gained experience in all phases from news reporting to sales. He worked his way from small Kentucky radio stations to Cincinnati's WCKY radio. He then went on to television reporting and anchoring in Cincinnati, OH, Huntington, WV, and St. Louis, MO. Twenty-five years in broadcasting as a Public Affairs Director, reporter, anchorman, feature writer and three times News Director enabled Tom to report on and travel the world. He was fortunate to interview many interesting people including John Lennon, Walter Cronkite, Paul Harvey, James Hoffa, Raymond Burr, Jane Mansfield, Andy Griffith, and Mary Tyler Moore to name a few. Tom parlayed his communication skills into his second career as a sales and marketing executive allowing for he and Suzanne to live in Massachusetts, Georgia, and California, before retiring to Sun City, AZ and then Chelmsford. He built cherished friendships in each of the states he lived and enjoyed playing cards, golfing, boating, fishing, watching baseball and basketball and reading daily papers paying particular attention to the sports pages. He will be particularly remembered for his wry sense of humor and charming way. Besides his wife Suzanne, Tom is survived by his two daughters: Deborah Hyson and her husband, John of Cold Spring, KY, Nicole Pinard and her husband Adam of Carlisle, MA; and Tom's son, Michael Jones and his wife Terri, of Indianapolis, IN; his grandchildren, Rachael, Valerie, Joshua, Jessica, Hannah, Caleb, Madeleine, and Austin as well as six great grandchildren. He also leaves behind a brother-in-law Gregory Wearly and his wife Nancy of Watertown, MA and a brother, Earl Jones, of Crittenden, KY Thanks to Palm Manor Nursing Home in Chelmsford and the Lahey Emergency Room in Burlington for the dedication and effort to provide quality care. Service: A private memorial service honoring Tom will be held in Newburyport where his cremains will be delivered to sea.
