Thomas Ernest (Tommy) Gerasch, aged 67, was born January 6, 1949 in New Ulm, Minnesota and died on January 3, 2017 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The son of Doris and Earl Gerasch, he grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and lived with his wife of thirty-six years, Pearl Wang, in Fairfax VA. Thomas was the first in his family to attend graduate school and earned a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was a founding member of the Computer Science department at George Mason University and taught there as both a mathematics and computer science professor from 1980 – 1986. Professionally, he was employed as a computer scientist with the MITRE Corporation for nearly thirty years working on software projects that he could not tell his wife about. His favorite activities were imbibing good beer, perusing Marvel comics, driving his Alfa Romeo Spider, and playing racquetball every week with his friends at the Fairfax Racquet Club. Thomas is survived by his wife Pearl, brother-in-law Tony Wang, best friend Ralph Tucci, and numerous relatives living across the country in Minnesota, Texas, and Wisconsin. Memorials will be held later this year in both Virgina and Wisconsin. He was laid to rest in Carlisle, Massachusetts.
