Obituary

Thomas W. Coan, 94, of Lincoln, Retired Deputy Fire Chief, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, Maine. He was the beloved husband of the late Catherine (Douglas) Coan. Born in Lincoln on November 30, 1917 he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Anna (Crowley) Coan. He attended Lincoln public schools and graduated from Concord High School in 1936. During World War II, he served as an Electrician's Mate First Class in the U. S. Navy on board the USS Tutuila. A lifelong Lincoln resident, he retired as Deputy Fire Chief after serving as a member of the Lincoln Fire Department for forty-two years. From 1942 to 1979 he worked for the US Navy. After WWII ended, he continued his service as a General Foreman Electrician at the Navy Ship Yard in Charlestown. During this time he traveled extensively both domestically and internationally and was proud to be a part of maintaining the Navy's fleet of ships. A communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Lincoln, he was a dedicated altar server and active volunteer. He was dedicated to his family, an avid gardener and fisherman and in his later years enjoyed golfing. Survivors include, his son, Stephen Coan of Stow, his daughters, Kathleen Taranto of Concord and Susan Coan of Portland, Maine, his sister, Madeline Venti of Concord, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Cemetery: Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Lincoln where Fr. Evans will read the committal prayers and officers of the U. S. Navy will present military honors. Visitation: Visiting hours will be held on Friday, June 8th from 4 to 8 PM in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. Relatives and personal friends of the deceased are kindly invited. Service: Funeral will be held on Saturday, June 9th from the Dee Funeral Home at 8:45 AM followed by a funeral Mass at 10 AM in St. Joseph's Church, 142 Lincoln Road, Lincoln. Celebrant of the Mass will be the Rev. George Evans, Pastor of St. Joseph's Church. Relatives and personal friends of the deceased are kindly invited.
