CONCORD – Thomas Bondaruk., 89, a long time Concord resident, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 15, 2012. Born on June 6, 1923 in Boston, he was the son of the late John A. Bondaruk and Vera (Carplick) Bondaruk. Tom was the beloved husband of the late C. Louise (Smith) Bondaruk for 51 years. Tom attended Boston public schools and graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School for Boys in 1940. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and served during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Tom worked as a government civilian in an accounting position based in Philadelphia. After a short time, Tom transferred to Boston to work at Hanscom Field in Bedford MA, moving to Concord in 1961. Tom worked in a government civilian position for 36 years. He greatly enjoyed his job as a Material Facilities Specialist. At times he would take his young children on base to see the aircraft. One of Tom's favorite stories from his days on the job was from 1964 when the Beatles landed at Hanscom Field prior to their concert at the Boston Garden. Tom joined a neighborhood swim club – the Heritage Pool and Racquet Club in 1967 and was actively involved on the Board of Directors of the club, encouraging his family to join the swim and tennis teams. Tom took up tennis late in life and thoroughly enjoyed playing the game for many years. An avid sportsman, Tom introduced his children to the game of golf, first recreationally, then as caddies. All three of his children caddied at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord. Tom was a caddy and a golfer at Franklin Park in Boston and golfed for many years, most notably at Franklin Park, George Wright and Stow Acres Country Club. Tom's favorite winter activities were pond hockey and skating, something he picked up in his youth in Boston. He taught his children how to skate on a small farm pond adjacent to his property. Tom retired from full time work in 1978. He continued to work on a part time basis at Digital Equipment Corporation for a few months each year, formally retiring in 1985. He and his wife Louise traveled for many years during the winter months to Florida. Upon his return to Concord every spring, Tom would tend to another of his favorite past times – gardening. Tom observed how the local Concord farmers worked the land and was soon planting and harvesting numerous crops. Tom was elated each summer when his vegetable garden provided fresh produce. Tom's true passion was his family. He devoted his life to his wife and children and later, his grandchildren. Tom spent many vacations with his children and grandchildren and took great care to make certain that he was available to attend family functions. Tom is survived by his three children: Nancy Wright and her husband Kendall of Concord; Thomas J. Bondaruk and his wife Jane of Andover; and Robert Bondaruk and his wife Lori of Hudson, NH. He is also survived by his five grandchildren: Kristen and Blake Wright of Concord; Emily and Brian Bondaruk of Andover; and Thomas of Hudson, NH and was the brother of the late Arthur Bondaruk.
