Theresia Maria Langrind (b. Nossis) 85, of Carlisle, Massachusetts, formerly of Norfolk VA, died peacefully at home on June 23rd. Devoted wife of 31 years to Roy G. Langrind (CDR USN, ret.). Beloved mother of Peter Max Langrind of New York City, Nicholas Langrind and his wife Darragh Murphy of Carlisle, and cherished grandmother of Mairead, Grete and Lily. Fond friend of many in Norfolk, Pascagoula, Cincinnati, and New York.
Theresia was born in New York City in 1930 to immigrant parents from Germany and Greece. Facing the hardships of the Depression, her mother sent her to Germany to live. She was happy in Germany with her aunt and uncle, but in 1937 as war loomed in Europe, she was sent home.
Back in New York, as an immigrant to her own native country, she excelled in school and learned English to perfection. In 1953, after completing high school and secretarial training, she went to work for the US Army implementing the Marshall Plan. She translated documents for the Army and traveled all over Europe with friends.
In 1959 she married Roy Langrind, a naval officer who was also a Brooklyn-born child of immigrants. As Roy's career in the Navy progressed they moved often: California, Philadelphia, Mississippi, Virginia. Along the way, two boys were born and they settled finally in Norfolk, Virginia. Theresia was a wonderful cook. Being a homemaker was, for her, a full-time and worthy job. She and Roy's shared values of frugality, hard work, and the importance of education allowed them to send both sons to college and to save for the future.
Roy died in 1990 and Theresia found herself a widow long before she expected. Although she missed her husband deeply, she also enjoyed her life in Norfolk. She loved her job at the art museum, made many friends, and traveled often. As her health declined and she needed to be cared for at home, Theresia came to live in Carlisle and spent her last year close to her son and granddaughters. Although she never carried a gun or wore a uniform in war, Theresia was a true member of the Greatest Generation, making a triumph of a life that held much hardship and struggle.
A service will be held in her memory on July 11th, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord MA 01742.
