Obituary

Terzo George Sablone, age 90, a lifelong Concord resident, died Monday, October 19th at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford following an extended illness. He was the husband for 47 years of the late Helen M. (Mackay) Sablone who died in 2010. Born in Concord on February 7, 1925, he was the eighth of eight children born to the late John and Davina (Faieta) Sablone. Terzo was the third born of the well-known Sablone triplets. Along with brothers Primo and Secondo, they were the first set of triplets known to have been born in Concord history. In their youth, the three were altar servers at St. Bernard's Church in Concord Center and attended Concord Public Schools. During World War II, at the age of 18, he joined the United States Army and served in the Pacific Theatre from 1943 to 1946. In 1948, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Staff Sergeant Sablone served his country for 20 years at locations throughout the world. His duty assignments included: Okinawa, Japan, Germany, Korea, Canada, and Washington state. During the Korean War, Sgt. Sablone was instrumental in collaborating a relief effort, which provided food, clothes and care packages to the Kyong-puk Sonyun Orphanage. He also brought medics from the base to provide medical care for the 140 orphans. Following his military career, George and his wife Helen returned to Concord. He was employed by Wilson Lumber Company in Concord, Digital Equipment Corporation in Billerica, and the Concord Lumber Company. He was a longtime member of Concord's VFW Post, and often marched with his fellow veterans in local parades. An avid golfer, he played for over twenty years at Patriot Golf Course in Bedford. He was a talented woodworker, and took a lot of pride in the birdhouses, picnic tables, and doghouses he constructed from scratch. In addition, he enjoyed fishing, camping, and cooking. George's greatest joy was his family. Survivors include his daughters, Heather Murray and her husband Dudley of Hyde Park, NY, and Patricia Kolarik and her late husband Francis of Shirley, his son, Gary Matthews and his wife Marjorie of Nashua, NH, his daughter-in-law, Myrna Matthews of Canada, as well as eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late G. Douglas Matthews and the brother of the late Frances Faieta, John Sablone, Ida Spinelli, Rico Sablone, Algisa Columbo, Primo Sablone, and Secondo "Al" Sablone.
