Tara Thomasina Breed, 44, of Denver, Colorado, passed away on July 27, 2015 one day before her 45th birthday. Tara was descending from the 13,088-foot summit of Paiute Peak in Boulder County, Colorado, when she slipped and fell. Sadly, she did not survive the fall.
After attending Concord Carlisle High School in Concord, Massachusetts, Tara graduated from the University of New Hampshire. Following university, she pursued her dream of living in Colorado and moved to Telluride, where she spent several years leading a youth services organization. After earning a Master's Degree in Occupational Health from Tufts University, she returned to Colorado, settling this time in Denver. At the time of her death she was an occupational therapist at Spalding Rehab in Denver where she dedicated herself towards helping patients regain physical, cognitive and mental strength.
As a child and teen, Tara treasured her adventurous summers as a much loved camper (and later, counselor) at Camp Nellie Huckins in Freedom, New Hampshire, with two of her sisters Lisa and Kate. She loved Camp Huckins well beyond her camp years – after forming so many deep friendships that endured. It was at Camp Huckins that Tara was first able to develop her love of adventure and exploration.
She was an avid competitive runner – completing the Boston Marathon 4 times and a variety of triathalons and road races across the world. In addition to her love of running, she had traveled much of the world to go hiking, biking, kayaking, and just plain exploring. She eagerly sought every opportunity she could to be outside in the fresh air, mountains, trails, and glaciers. Tara ventured to Mount Everest on several treks – and her most recent visit in April of this year she survived the Nepal earthquakes. She was a member of the Colorado Mountain Club and volunteered to serving meals to those in need through Project Angel Heart.
With an open heart, Tara was always the first to offer assistance to friends, strangers (who were friends she had just not yet met) and animals. Some might say she was giving to a fault, but those who knew her, knew it was a gift. If she did have a vice, it was dark chocolate.
Her unassuming and calming yet persistent presence made everything better and inspired you to be better. No matter where she was or what she was doing, Tara truly savored every moment of every day. She gave 100% commitment to everything she did. Her smile was limitless and will be missed.
She is preceded in death by her father Robert M. Breed (2006). Tara is survived by her mother Maureen (Sullivan) Breed of Concord, Sisters Mona Breed Kozlevcar of New Jersey, Lisa Moorhouse of Atlanta and Kate Smith of Dorchester, Brothers in Law Carl Kozlevcar, Sean Moorhouse and Mike Smith, Niece Olivia Kozlevcar and Nephews Andrew Kozlevcar and Gavin Smith.
Visitation will be Monday August 3, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 at Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord, Massachusetts.
Funeral services will begin from the Dee Funeral Home on Tuesday August 4th at 10 am followed by a procession to the family burial plot in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord where a prayer service will be held graveside at 11 am.
Celebration of life services will follow in Denver time and place to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Camp Nellie Huckins www.camphuckins.com or the Colorado Mountain Club www.cmc.org in memory of Tara.
