Sylvia Mendenhall, 89, of Chelmsford, Teacher Emerita at Concord Academy, died peacefully on Thursday, June 23rd at the Lowell General Hospital.
Born in New York, NY on May 30, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John Ross Mendenhall and Louise (Killinger) Mendenhall.
After growing up in New York City, she studied at Smith College in Northampton, before earning her Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Harvard University in Cambridge.
A beloved educator, she taught English at Concord Academy for nearly forty years.
Even after her retirement, she continued her devotion to students by tutoring at the Academy as well as attending numerous campus events. Sylvia was also an avid tennis player and a voracious reader.
Survivors include her sister, Joan Schreder of New York, NY, her nephew, Michael Schreder of CT, her niece, Bonnie Nazarath of OR, and her close friends, Audrey Stoddard and Jesselyn Tobin of Carlisle, and Heather, Clayton, and Tyler Abrams, all of Carlisle.
A memorial service will be held at Concord Academy on Saturday September 17, 2016 at 1:30 pm with refreshments served on campus following the service.
Private burial was in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.
