Sylvia (Milliken) Klinck of Concord, MA and Kennebunk Beach, ME, died on July 17, 2012, after a brief illness, just a few weeks shy of her ninetieth birthday. She was the beloved wife of 34 years of the late Frederick C. Klinck, who died in 1984. Sylvia was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland on August 14, 1922. She lived there with her devoted grandfather and her parents, until the age of four. She fondly remembered her days in Ireland and would share stories about her time there, particularly about the time she spent with her grandfather and how much they missed each other after she left. Sylvia moved to Canada with her family for a short while, and then to Everett, Mass., where they settled. When she was ten, she welcomed a baby sister to the family, Mona, whom she adored. They became best friends, and remained so throughout her entire life. Sylvia attended the Everett public schools, where she stood out as a student. After she graduated she went on to attend Tufts University (Jackson College for Women at the time), and received a degree in history in 1944. Her love of and loyalty to Tufts lasted her entire life, and she never missed an opportunity to go back to campus for an event or reunion. Living briefly in New York City after she graduated, Sylvia worked for the Margaret Sanger Clinic. She also helped in the war effort during World War II, working for the railroads as a laborer, helping to maintain the tracks by dipping rails in acid to clean them. She then worked for Monsanto Corporation in Boston, prior to her marriage to Mr. Klinck in 1950. Sylvia and Fred moved to Concord in 1952, and both of them became active members of the community, serving on many town committees and boards. One of Sylvia's proudest accomplishments was serving on the Concord School Committee. She also served on the Concord-Carlisle High School Building Committee in 1960. She was a member of the Historic Districts Commission as well. As an active member of the First Parish in Concord, Sylvia served as president of the Women's Parish Association, and was honored to be the first woman to serve as Trustee at the church and was also a deacon. She served on the Standing Committee, the Ministerial Search Committee, the Archives Committee, and several others as well. Sylvia was an active volunteer at the Thoreau Lyceum, working as a buyer for their gift shop. She also helped to organize and run their annual Christmas greens sale and spent many hours there in preparation for this event, as well as for other events and fundraisers that took place at the Lyceum over the years. As her three daughters grew older, she took a job at the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee in Boston. She then worked at Harvard University for several years, and finally, after the death of her husband, came back to Concord to work as the Executive Director of the Concord Chamber of Commerce until her retirement. Sylvia will long be remembered for her story telling skills, her keen interest in politics and social justice, her love of Concord and her desire to serve her community, and her love and devotion to her friends and family. Sylvia leaves behind a sister, Mona Jameson, of Lexington, and three daughters, Wendy Klinck Walker of Weston, Lisa Klinck-Shea of San Francisco, and Andrea Adams and her husband Jeffrey of Concord. She also leaves 7 grandchildren, Sarah and Katie Shea, and Nathan, Evan, Cameron, Gordon and Graham Adams. She was the aunt of Judith Jameson, Martha Rothschild, Jonathan Jameson, Edward Carpenter, the late Peter Carpenter, and the late Mary Drew and her surviving daughter Helen Buckley. She was also the sister-in-law of the late George and Mae Jetter and Dorothy and Edward Carpenter. A memorial service to celebrate Sylvia's life will be held at the First Parish in Concord on Saturday, September 22nd, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Women's Parish Association at the First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Rd., Concord, MA 01742 or to the Tufts University Class of 1944 Scholarship Fund, c/o E.
