Susan Underwood Seward, 78, died at her Concord home on Friday, October 19th following a long illness.
Susan was born in Amarillo, Texas in 1940 to Robert Ezra Underwood and Roberta Carroll Underwood. She was predeceased by sisters Robin Russell and Leslie Underwood.
Susan attended the Hockaday School in Dallas; Smith College, Massachusetts; and graduated from the University of Texas, Austin.
Susan married Thomas A. Fredericks in 1959. Following Thomas's death, she married Frederick D. Seward in 1973.
As a devout Catholic and an unapologetic Democrat, with southern roots and a New England sensibility, Susan embodied the values of social justice and compassion through her work as an elementary school teacher in California, through volunteer service at the Montessori School and at the Eliot Center in Concord, and by teaching Sunday School at Holy Family. She also served as Secretary of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which reaches out to those in need.
As a loving mother her care and support kept our bi-coastal family together. She is survived by her husband, Fred; her children and stepchildren, Barbara Fredericks, John D. Fredericks, Robert U. Seward, and Anne D. Seward; their spouses Lisa Walker Fredericks, Tracey Hill, and Pat Kirkhuff; and by her grandchildren, Thomas Fredericks, Blaise Fredericks-Place, Moselle Fredericks, Simon Fredericks-Place, Charlie Fredericks, and Laurence (Laurie) Hill-Seward.
A funeral mass will be held at Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center, on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 10:00am, followed by a burial service at St. Bernard's Cemetery and a reception at her home.
