Stuart Garen Ferguson, age 55, of Acton, died peacefully at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln on Saturday, February 1, 2020, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Stuart was the son of the late Dr. B. Dan and Anna Ferguson. He was the devoted husband for 20 years of Lyn Ferguson. In addition to his wife, Lyn, Stuart is survived by his brothers, Douglas and Scott Ferguson, his sister-in-law Priscilla MacKenzie, his sister Bonnie Ferguson, and his niece, Julianna Ferguson, his Saxenian and Heller cousins, and numerous dear friends.
Stuart grew up in Newton, attended Newton North High School, and graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Arts in History. As a child and teenager, Stuart enjoyed music, art, and outdoor activities. He spent summers and holidays at the family's home in Barnstead, New Hampshire, swimming, skiing, and ice-skating with his brothers and cousins. From an early age, Stuart had a boundless passion and talent for music. As a child he studied piano with his Aunt Dolly Heller, and was an accomplished flautist before picking up the guitar in his teens. Stuart had a beautiful voice and an almost effortless ability as a singer. He began writing songs for voice and guitar in his twenties, embarking on a life as a singer songwriter. Stuart performed frequently at coffeehouses and other venues in New England and beyond, which is how he met Lyn, also a singer songwriter. Stuart recorded a great deal of original music, including his albums Shackles and Ties, and Love Songs and Other Tall Tales. Stuart and Lyn loved to perform together, sometimes collaborating with other musicians. Over the course of his musical career, Stuart was a member of several bands, trios, and duets.
Stuart also worked at Harvard Medical School in the department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology for over 20 years. Beloved by his colleagues, he received the Dolores J. Brown staff award for outstanding service and dedication to the mission of the Medical School.
Stuart had an infectious sense of humor, a wide-ranging curiosity about the world, and a deeply philosophical outlook. He loved the Red Sox, the Bruins, the Patriots, the Clash, the Grateful Dead, quoting Monty Python, playing his cherished Stratocaster, and spending time with his wife and their dogs. He was a true and loyal friend who touched the lives of all who knew him, and he will be profoundly missed.
