Stephen J. Darby, Jr., 89, of Concord, formerly of Harvard, passed away at home on June 17, 2022. A graduate of Public School 68 and Grover Cleveland High School, in Queens, he was the first in his family to attend college. He completed his B.A. on a full academic scholarship from Hofstra, where he played lacrosse and met his devoted wife of 67 years. Following his military service, he worked his way to a professional career in institutional investment, retiring as executive vice president of U.S. Trust. Possessed of a seemingly indefatigable work ethic, he was driven by the necessity, while still in his 20's, of becoming the sole provider for four generations of family upon the sudden death of his father Stephen Sr. It was his life's work to provide an education for his children that would free them from financial worry, which he managed while attending as many school functions, plays, and athletic events as his busy schedule would allow - a devotion he was able to duplicate with his grandchildren. After a couple of hip surgeries, he gave up tennis to enjoy golfing with friends for many more active years. In a house filled with visiting friends, music and summer campers all were welcome, and meals were events punctuated by hilarity and lively discussion that would frequently begin late and end much later. In addition to his wife Marjorie, he is survived by, Brian and Debra Darby, Glen and Julie Darby, Laura and Jim McNally, Karen Darby Scott and David Kloss, Marcella Shea Davis, 10 grandchildren, and an assortment of friends and relations still touched by their inclusion in a wildly extended family where kids stayed over for a night or a summer, pets stayed for life, and the door was always open. Godspeed. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, July 30th at the Middlesex School Chapel, 1400 Lowell Road in Concord. Family members will gather for a private burial service at Bellevue Cemetery in Harvard. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute , P.O.
