Obituary

Sidney Tavern Grove died peacefully on Thursday, September 1, 2022. She was born February 15, 1935, the daughter of Dorothy Shaw Tavern, a Red Cross organizer and church secretary, and Joseph John Tavern, a career Marine officer who died tragically when Sidney was seven years old.

Following her father's death, Sidney and her mother moved to Andover, MA. After graduating from Punchard High School, she attended Hood College in Frederick, MD and did her graduate work at the University of Vermont in Burlington.

She married William Jarboe "Bo" Grove on June 7, 1958 and they embarked on a 64 year journey together. She was an Air Force wife for the first 32 years of her married life managing 24 changes of duty station. She was the first lady at three major military installations – Castle Air Force Base in Merced, CA, Chanute Technical Training Center in Rantoul, IL and The United States Logistics Group in Ankara, Turkey. During her Air Force years she mentored young officers' wives and served on boards and committees of social and philanthropic groups all over the world. Sidney actively volunteered throughout her life including building houses in Appalachia with her church, working at a health clinic in Ghana, chairing a fund-raising committee for an orphanage in Ankara, and many years of volunteer work at local hospitals.

After retirement from the Air Force, she was active with her church, hospital and the garden club in Bristol, VA and New London, NH. She and her husband moved to Newbury Court in Concord, MA in 2015 where she finally allowed someone else to fix her dinner and make the beds!

Strong, independent, purposeful, productive and industrious are just some of the words her friends and family use to describe Sidney. Her intellectual curiosity and vast knowledge contributed to her ability to have a thoughtful, nuanced conversation with anyone. She was well read, widely travelled and a gifted linguist, easily picking up and conversing in the language of the countries she visited and lived in.

She is survived by her husband Bo -- two daughters, Sara Grove Macaulay and her husband Jim, and Hannah Shaw Grove and her partner Aris -- two granddaughters, Emily Macaulay Lawson and her husband Eric, and Isabel Garland Macaulay -- three great grandchildren, William, Nora and Abigail Lawson.

Relatives and friends will gather for a memorial service in Duvall Chapel at Newbury Court, 80 Deaconess Road, Concord, on Saturday, October 1st at 11 am. Private burial was held at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
