Shirley Phillips Butterworth, 88, of South Dartmouth, MA, passed away at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford, MA, on Thursday, March 24, 2022. She was born on August 30, 1933, to the late Sumner W. Phillips and Alice Boisvert Phillips in Manchester, NH.
She grew up in the Boston area and Concord, MA, graduating from Concord High School. She received her college degree in Biochemistry with high honors at Northeastern University, where she was President of her class; Vice President of The Academy – scholastic honor society of the College of Liberal Arts; and secretary of the student union. At age 21, she made the local newspapers when she received the Omega Sigma Key Award for outstanding service for the all-university sorority, but she was unable to attend the award ceremony due to the arrival of her first child, Greg.
Throughout her marriage, she lived in Redding, CT, Stowe, VT (where she and her husband ran Smugglers Inn), Littleton, MA, Moorestown, NJ, Dublin, NH, and South Dartmouth, MA (where they ran a bookstore called "The Navigator Shop"). Over the years, her adventuress spirit took her abroad, visiting several countries and Caribbean Islands with family and friends.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she loved books, sailing, gardening, knitting, singing in the South Dartmouth Congregational Church Choir and most of all her family and friends. She will be lovingly remembered by all.
She is survived by son Greg Butterworth (and wife Susan) of Concord, MA; son Jeff Butterworth (and wife Susan) of Camden, ME; daughter Susan B. Colwell (and husband Chris) of Apex, NC; daughter Cheryl B. Crawford (and husband Kurt) of Deerfield, NH; son-in-law Allan Davidson of Rotonda West, FL; grandchildren: Andrew Butterworth (and Erika), Nicole Butterworth, Brandon Davidson, Brett Davidson, Danielle B. Pattison (and Chris), Stevie Butterworth, Zachary Colwell (and Anna), Elizabeth Colwell, Mallory Crawford, Amanda Crawford; great-grandchildren: Mason Crawford, Aubrey Pattison, Taylor Pattison, William Colwell, and the newest addition, Madeleine Butterworth.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Dean Butterworth and her daughter, Lynne A. (Butterworth) Davidson.
The Butterworth family would like to thank all the good neighbors and friends for the loving friendship and care they showed Shirley.
The family will be gathering for a private graveside burial at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, MA.
