Shirley Lewis Brown of Concord, Mass. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, April 9, 2015 after a prolonged illness. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February, 27, 1925 to Harold Lewis and Hilda Rühl Lewis.
She earned a B.A. in Music from MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois, and an M.A. in Music Theory from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York. She was on the music faculty of The University of Texas, Austin from1950 to 54, and was a volunteer member of the music faculty at St. Anne's School for Girls, Arlington, Mass in the 1970s and '80s.
A Concord resident since 1964, she was a volunteer organist, Children's Choir Director, and Handbell Choir Director at Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord, Mass and in the 1960s, and at First Parish in Concord in the1970s and '80s, and volunteer Choral Director at Bethany in Lincoln, Mass. in the 1970s. She was also a published composer and arranger of sacred and handbell music.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Gene M. Brown of Concord, Mass., to whom she was married since 1954; a son, James L. Brown of Houston, Texas; a son, Lindsey A. Brown and his wife, Kathleen W. Brown, of Concord, Mass.; a daughter, Holly Brown Everbach and her husband, E. Carr Everbach, of Wallingford, Penn.; and four grandchildren: Lauren R. Brown of Concord, Mass., Ian C. Everbach, Sophie R. Everbach, and Helen M. Everbach, all of Wallingford, Penn.
