Obituary

Sherwin H. Cooper, 95, of Lincoln, passed away at The Commons of Lincoln on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, following a brief illness. He was the husband of Tamar March, with whom he shared over 40 years of loving partnership.

Born in New York City on March 1, 1927, he was the son of the late Samuel and Sylvia Cooper. After earning an undergraduate degree from Cornell University and serving in the Army during the Korean War, he completed his PhD in Historical Geography at the University of Michigan. A dedicated Professor, his first academic appointment was to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which was followed by appointments to the University of Cincinnati and then Boston University.

After his time at BU, Sherwin shifted to a new career as a certified Radio Officer for the United States Merchant Marine. He was a proud union member for the Association of Radio Officers. While serving aboard vessels, he had the opportunity to visit many destinations around the globe. This was a defining period in his life, when his background in Geography was augmented by the experiences of global travel. He was a vigilant supporter of nature and wildlife. For ethical reasons, he was a strict vegetarian for many years.

Sherwin will also be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, love of classical music, literature, and photography. He was devoted to the Town of Concord and revered its place in the history of this country. He loved children and cherished the children in his life. Before his illness, he attended meetings of the Thoreau Society, and had planned to become more active in it.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind two children, Irene Jackson and Jeffrey Cooper; two step-children, Michael March and Nadine Brown; one grandchild, Carter Jackson, along with three step-grandchildren, Patrick Montagna, Laura Montagna and Timothy Jacob Brown. He was the beloved uncle of Mary del Bono, Harvey Cooper and Susan Cooper, and the surviving brother of the late Max and David Cooper.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sherwin's memory may be made to organizations that were close to his heart: Oxfam , Doctors Without Borders or World Wildlife Fund .
