Obituary

Selma A. (Thileen) Gill, 83, a longtime Concord resident, died at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, following a valiant fight with a lengthy illness. She was the beloved wife of Frank B. Gill. They married on June 16, 1962 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord, and cherished their 61 years together.

She was born in Boston on May 26, 1940 to her late parents, Ralph and Lois (Samuels) Thileen. The family moved to Concord when Selma was young, and she spent the rest of her life in a town she loved wholeheartedly. She graduated with the class of 1958 from Concord High School, where she played trumpet in the school's orchestra. During her younger years, she worked as a Receptionist for the Grayson-Stadler Company in West Concord, before taking a job at Harvard Trust Branch in Concord, where she met Frank. After the couple started their family, her primary focus was devoted to raising their children. Later, she became a dedicated Crossing Guard for the Concord Police Department, a role she took immense pride in, given that her father served as a Police Officer in town for years. She fully retired in 2014 following employment at several area medical offices.

Selma will be remembered as a lovable person with a kind and gentle soul. She could always be counted on for wise guidance, often paired with one of her familiar short phrases, which served as an incredible support system for family and friends, especially when someone needed it most. Her fabulous sense of humor was a hallmark and endeared her to many. She never lost the ability to make others smile, even keeping her hospice nurses laughing in the final days of her life. She and Frank enjoyed their travels. They spent nearly fifty days at sea on collective cruises throughout the years while sailing destinations including the Caribbean, Alaska and Panama Canal. A special highlight for Selma on these trips was the invitation to attend a Captain's Dinner. They spent the summer months at their beloved family property on Squam Lake. She found joy tending to her garden and utilizing her talent for cooking and baking. The elaborate homemade birthday cakes and Christmas cookies were among the favorites of her culinary creations. She also enjoyed sewing and crocheting.

She lived for her grandchildren, who affectionately know her as Nana. She was actively involved in their daily lives, attending countless sporting events and school activities. As the beneficiaries of having Selma as a grandmother, each of them have embodied and picked up at least one of her amazing traits and hobbies. Selma leaves a lasting legacy of love through her family, all of whom she was very proud.

In addition to her husband and soul mate, Frank, she will be forever missed by her son, Glenn Gill of Leominster, her daughter, Christine Shaw and her husband Greg of Stow, her grandchildren, Gianna Gill, Morgan, Madi, Michael, Greg Jr. and Taylor Shaw, her sister, Marion Crocker of Maynard, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Family and friends will gather for visiting hours at Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center on Tuesday, July 11th from 4 to 7 pm. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 12th at 11 am in the Chapel of Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street, Concord. Burial at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery will be private at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Selma's memory may be made to the COPD Foundation.
