Salvatore C. Silvio, Jr., of Dunstable, formerly of Concord, MA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, surrounded by his beloved daughters. Sal was 87 years old, and a retired Lieutenant of the Concord Police Department. His life was marked by unconditional selfless service to his family, friends, country and community.
After 19 years apart, Sal has been reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Grace E. (Wilder) Silvio, who died in 2002. They married on June 18, 1955, and resided in his Concord childhood home, where Sal and Grace raised their three daughters.
Born in Waltham on November 3, 1933, he was the loving son of the late Salvatore and Teresa (Landry) Silvio. He attended Concord schools, where he graduated in 1953 from Concord High School. During his high school career, he attained varsity in football, baseball and basketball, becoming football co-captain in 1952. Sal was an instrumental right guard and tackle in one of the most memorable achievements for the Town of Concord's athletic history – taking home the Piedmont Bowl trophy in 1951 from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was the recipient of the 1952 co-captain unanimous choice award in the Football Hall of Fame induction. He, along with his 1951 football teammates, were later inducted into Concord-Carlisle High School's Athletic Hall of Fame. From 1955 until 1956, Sal served honorably in the United States Army as Private First Class, which included being stationed in Iceland.
1957 began his professional career in law enforcement. He joined the Concord Police Department as a Special Patrolman, and achieved the rank of Detective and Inspector. After graduating from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia in 1978, Sal earned the position of Lieutenant, which he held until his retirement in 1988. Soon after, Sal took on a part-time position at a then family-owned Dunkin Donuts in Townsend. He fully retired at the age of 80 to spend more quality time with family. Over the years, Sal was active with the Concord Kiwanis Club, Concord Elks, Concord Rod & Gun Club, Concord Rotary Club and Poultney, VT Five Club.
Family was the center of Sal's life. Countless happy memories were made at his favorite spot, Cape Cod. He cherished boating, the beach, and on several occasions, was the "Grand Marshal" of a pirate treasure hunt involving all nine grandchildren. He loved family trips to Disney World and skiing at Waterville Valley. A fabulous cook, he took pride in preparing and serving family dinners for all the extended relatives, a tradition started by his parents. Sal was in his glory cooking for a crowd, and watching everyone enjoy their meal. His famous "Papa Soup", clam chowder, pasta, sauce and meatballs will be especially missed. Sal treasured reminiscing about good times shared with family and friends, and was always planning on making new memories.
His legacy lives on through his three daughters, Cheryl Chase and her husband David of Plymouth, Beth Sloan and her husband Donny of Acton and Tina Caruso of Dunstable. He was the proud grandfather of Nicholas Chase, Derek Chase and his girlfriend Adasha Sage, Sarah Chase and her husband Mike Gormley, Patrick Sloan, Jenny Sloan and her husband Brendan O'Brien, Andrew Sloan, Alex Caruso, Mariah Caruso and her husband Devon Wagner, and Jillian Caruso, along with six great grandchildren, Andi Lynn Weir, Hunter and Mason Chase, Grace Gormley, Skylar Chase, and Bennett O'Brien.
