Sally Porté Roetzel Lanagan of Concord, MA, beloved wife of 45 years of Michael Robert Lanagan, died unexpectedly Wednesday, February 1st. Born August 28, 1945 in Ardmore, Oklahoma, Sally was the daughter of Genevieve and Joseph Peter Roetzel, and the great granddaughter of a Kansas lawman who immigrated to Oklahoma during the territorial land rush and who carried one of the state's first electoral votes. The family lived in Houston, Texas for several years before settling in Colorado Springs, CO. Sally became an accomplished competitive horsewoman and was a member of the Austin Bluff Rangers riding club and a founding member of the Rangerettes, a girls' precision drill team that performed at the Colorado Springs Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and other local events. After graduating from St. Mary's High School, she attended the San Diego College for Women and then graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Sally met Mike when she was a senior in high school. They were married August 12, 1967. They moved to Pasadena, CA, where their first son, Sean, was born and where Sally taught at an Elementary School in Arcadia, CA. The family then lived in Englewood, CO, where their second son, Tad, was born in Denver, CO. After living in Colorado for 10 years, the family moved to Orlando, Florida for 2 years before resettling in Concord, Massachusetts, where Sally and Mike have lived for almost 30 years. Sally was devoted to a strong sense of community, in particular the community of Concord. She poured her limitless energy, persistence, optimism, and kindness into supporting the causes she held dear. She generously gave her time, efforts and vision to the Concord schools, co-chairing the Community Educational Symposium for Concord Schools, serving as class mother multiple times, hosting French exchange students, developing the Middle School Store, acting as Cub Scout Den Mother, serving on Parents Association Boards, and in countless other ways. Friends who worked with Sally through the years on committees, boards, and an abundance of community projects had a phrase for the high quality and whole heart she brought to everything she did. To do something "the SL way" was to do it well, with precision, style, and a sense of moral energy. Working on projects with Sally was a true pleasure because she combined her sense of purpose with kindness, laughter, and respect. Sally was an active member and leader of The Garden Club of Concord since 1993, where she served as chair of Membership, was a member of the Executive Board, and chaired Community Projects/Grants and Programs. Sally also dedicated well over 20 years to actively supporting the Concord Museum, where she served 2 terms as President of the Guild of Volunteers, 8 years on the Board of Governors, 2 years on the Trustees, and 7 years chairing the all-important Garden Selection Committee for one of the Concord Museum's largest annual fundraising events, Garden Affairs. Sally found special joy decorating trees for the museum's annual Family Trees exhibit and in helping secure gardens for the Annual Garden Tour, tasks that combined her passion for gardening with her love of the museum. Over the years, Sally also gave her time and energy to many other organizations and projects, including St. Bernard's, now Holy Family Parish, Princeton University, from which both of her sons graduated, and twice co-chairing Tastes of Our Towns for Concord Family Service. Once her boys graduated high school, Sally pursued her passion for art and design by earning a Certificate of Decorative Arts at the Boston Architectural College as the first graduate of the Certificate of Historic Preservation, Period Interiors program. She later used her knowledge and talents in formal design to serve the clients of her business, Porta Design, to design a room for the Lyman Estate's holiday open house, and to serve the town of Concord through the Historic Districts Commission. Family and friends were the most important part of Sally's life. She had an innate ability to bring people together, and to reach out in quiet but profoundly effective ways to support her many friends with remarkable loyalty, energy, and generosity of spirit. She found her greatest pleasure, though, in her family. She loved having her two grandchildren, Molly and Garrett, nearby, taking them on "special adventures" such as treks to the Museum of Science, a boat trip on the Cambridge river, or a birthday adventure at the Mt. Washington Hotel. She also loved her many travels with Mike and her sons, including trips to France, Germany, southern Africa, and other international destinations, as well as her many visits to Colorado to be with her sisters, Jan and Judy, and their families. In addition to her beloved husband, Mike, Sally is survived by her children, Sean Michael Lanagan and his wife Leslie of Concord and Tad Patrick Lanagan and his fiancée Sarah Andel of Winterport, ME; her grandchildren Molly Marais Lanagan and Garrett Joseph Lanagan, both of Concord; and her dear sisters Jan Oxman (Roetzel) of Arvada, CO and her children Kip Oxman and Heather Duncan, and Judy Meisner (Roetzel) and her husband Bob of Golden, CO and their children Beth and Todd Conley and Amy Hegwood (Conley). Sally is also survived by her mother-in-law Yvonne Hunter of Salt Lake City, UT, her brother-in-law Kevin Lanagan and his wife Nancy of Lutherville, MD and their children James and Erin Lanagan, as well as 7 great nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed. Visitation: Visitation will be on Thursday evening, February 9th from 7 to 9 PM and on Friday February 10th, 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. Service: Funeral will be held on Saturday, February 11th at 9 AM from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 AM in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center.
