Sabra Steele Flood, 84, passed away unexpectedly on April 11, 2022. A resident at Newbury Court and Rivercrest in Concord, MA, and formerly of Sherborn, MA, Falmouth, MA, and Naples, FL, she was the beloved wife for 57 years of the late John W. Flood, who died in 2017.
Born on March 5, 1938, Sabra was the daughter of the late Mabbott and Marion (Hoyle) Steele. She was raised in Wellesley and graduated from Wellesley High School. She earned a B.S. in Public Administration from Simmons College.
Sabra and John were married in June 1960 and soon thereafter they purchased their first home in South Natick. It was into this home that their children Melinda and Stephen were born, as were the family's earliest cherished memories. In 1971 the family moved to Sherborn, where John and Sabra ultimately resided for over 30 years.
In the mid-seventies, Sabra began volunteer work at a local mental health center, which led to her second Simmons degree, a clinically focused Master of Social Work. Sabra was a licensed psychotherapist working in both private and community settings for many years.
In the 1980s, Sabra received her third degree from Simmons, this time an MBA. With her newest degree, she took her clinical skills to the world of human resources management and corporate career planning, first at BankBoston and later at Lee Hecht Harrison. This work was her passion and her gift, and she maintained a private practice until her retirement in 2010.
Following her official retirement, Sabra was a committed volunteer with many organizations but most important, to her, was her work with hospice organizations on Cape Cod and in Naples where she provided companionship to many people through their final weeks and hours of life.
In 2014, Sabra and John moved to Newbury Court in Concord where she was involved in multiple committees and activities, and where she struck up a whole new set of friendships that she treasured until the very last day of her life.
In a world so often guided by intellect, Sabra unflinchingly tracked to her own heart and the hearts of others. Her deep love of poetry, nature, and animals, the compassion she bestowed upon others through her work, and the tender care she provided for John in his final years were testament to the depth of her soul.
Above all else, Sabra was devoted to her children. She will be forever and profoundly missed by her daughter, Melinda Flood of Concord, and her son, Stephen Flood and his wife Claire of Wales, UK. She was the sister of the late Priscilla Powell and her late husband Richard. She also leaves her sisters-in-law Deborah Flood (wife of the late Roger) of Prosper TX and Barbara Flood (wife of the late Frank) of Brecksville OH, along with seven nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service in Sabra's honor on Friday, May 6, 2022 at 10 am in Duvall Chapel at Newbury Court, 80 Deaconess Road, Concord, MA.
