Ruth H. (Lowery) Lifner, 89, of Concord died Monday November 25, 2013 in Concord after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of 52 years of the late George E. 'Chic' Lifner, who died in 1999. Born in Concord on April 1, 1924, she was the daughter of the late J. Arnold Lowery and Florence E. (Bowker) Lowery. She attended Belmont public schools and was a 1942 graduate of Belmont High School. She later attended Kathleen Dell School in Brookline, for medical secretaries studies, and upon completion went to work for Dr. Elliott P. Joslin, founder of the famed Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. She and her husband were the former owners and operators of the Bedford 5 & 10 during the 1950's and also The Concord Shopper store during the 1960's. They remained in the retail business for many years. She retired recently after twenty-five years of working as a census taker for the Town of Concord. She was an active long time member and volunteer at the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Concord, and also did volunteer work for the Concord Council on Aging. An avid knitter, throughout the years she knitted numerous sweaters, baby quilts and baby caps and donated them to Emerson Hospital in Concord. She was the mother of Kurt G. Lifner and his wife Joan of Berthoud, CO and Craig E. Lifner Sr. and his wife Kathy of Maynard, grandmother of Tracey M. and Erik R. Lifner, both of CO, Craig E. Lifner Jr. of Boxborough and Brett T. Lifner of Maynard and is also survived by her niece Constance Smithwood of Littleton. A memorial service will be held on Thursday December 12th at 11 am in Trinitarian Congregational Church, 54 Walden Street, Concord Center. A reception will follow in the Church hall. Private interment will be in the family burial plot in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.
