Robert Wayne Pierce, 80, of Carlisle and Cotuit, Massachusetts died peacefully at Chatham's Liberty Commons on Sunday, June 3, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born on September 22, 1937 in Melrose, Massachusetts to his loving parents, Leon and Nina Pierce. He loved his brothers Paul, Ray and Lee and his sister Phyllis tremendously.
Bob was a graduate of Malden High School where he excelled in football, baseball and track. In 1955, his senior year, Bob was co-captain of the Malden High Tornado track team. He became the state mile champion with a record breaking time of 4:41.3. His relay team ran at the Penn Relays that same year. Bob went on to run both cross-country and track for Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts breaking his mile record with a time of 4:17.
Bob then spent two years in the Army at Fort Bliss, Texas. Upon his return, Bob went into banking. While working at the State Street Bank in Boston, Massachusetts, Bob met the love of his life, Francien Riekhoff Pierce. They married on June 22, 1968 in Francien's home town of Oldenzaal, in the Netherlands.
Bob and Francien settled in Billerica, Massachusetts where they had two daughters, Mariska and Heather. There, Bob was an active member of the local rotary club. The family of four moved to Carlisle, Massachusetts in 1981, where they created many happy, wonderful memories. The Pierces loved to travel, visiting Francien's Dutch family as well as many surrounding countries. Bob always had a special place in his heart for Ireland and would often be seen wearing his Irish cap. Bob also loved to take his family up to Stowe, Vermont where they often skied and enjoyed the outdoors together.
In his banking career, Bob climbed to the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Lending Officer. In 2000, Bob and Francien retired to sunny Cotuit, Cape Cod, where they enjoyed many mornings together drinking Dutch coffee on the porch. During his retirement years, Bob enjoyed coaching the Bourne cross-country and track teams.
In 2011, Bob became an Opa, welcoming his granddaughter, Sophie. Sophie was Opa's special girl and the apple of his eye. They often schemed together to get an extra cookie after dinner together. Family meant everything to Bob and he was at his happiest when his family was altogether.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Francien, his wonderful brother Lee of Connecticut, his two devoted children Mariska and Heather and his adoring granddaughter Sophie.
The Pierce Family would like to thank the nursing and hospice staff at Chatham's Liberty Commons Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center for the care and comfort they provided for the Pierce Family. We would also like to thank all the people from the VNA and Bayada for their years of dedicated care.
