Obituary

Robert J. Hull, 85, of Lincoln, MA, formerly of Concord and Salem, MA, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at The Commons in Lincoln. Bob was born on July 6, 1936, in Salem, to American but Polish speaking parents, the late Walter and Stefania "Stella" (Dunajski) Hull. Despite only speaking Polish upon entering the first grade, Bob excelled in school, achieving Valedictorian at St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers, Class of 1953, where he was also a member of the track team. Following graduation, Bob commuted to MIT in Cambridge, where he joined the swim team, learned to sail on the Charles River, and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1957 and a PhD in Physics in 1961. During summers in Salem, Bob worked as a lifeguard at the Salem Willows, and met his devoted wife-to-be, Jean (affectionately known as "Jeanie"), during one of these summers at nearby Collins Cove. They hit it off instantly and became inseparable, marrying at the Immaculate Conception Church in December, 1958. For the next decade, from 1960-70, the couple traveled across the country and back, bearing six children along the way. Bob joined the Army, attended the US Army School/Training Center at Fort McClellan, Alabama, and achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After being discharged from the Army, the family moved to Berkeley, California, where Bob was an Associate Professor of Physics at U.C. Berkeley, followed by a move to Buffalo, NY, to teach at SUNY. Bob eventually gained employment at MIT Lincoln Laboratory as a Physicist, working on laser optics and other classified government projects, which brought them back to Massachusetts, where they settled in Concord in 1969. Bob and Jean lived happily in Concord for 50 years. They had many friends in the community; they actively attended St. Bernard's Church (later Holy Family Parish) in Concord Center, enjoyed friendly bridge games with neighbors and other couples from the lab; joined the Heritage Pool and Racquet Club, where Bob enjoyed playing tennis and cheering on his kids on the swim team. Bob joined the company bowling league, and won numerous trophies and accolades. He was an avid gardener and handyman; a recreational astronomer and sailor, taking his wife and 6 young children on many excursions out of Marblehead Harbor or Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro, NH, on his shared O'Day Daysailer, the BobaLou. After retirement, in his 60s and 70s, Bob took up golf and cooking. He passed on his love of Polish cuisine and tradition to his ever burgeoning family. Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean (Collins) Hull, as well as his children: John Hull and his wife, Deborah, of Madison, Wisconsin; Gerald "Jerry" Hull and his wife, Amy, of Amherst, NH; Suzanne (Hull) Stanley, of Nashua, NH; Martha Hull of Concord; Carol (Hull) Green and her husband, Bob Green of Medford, MA; and Matthew Hull and his wife, Laurie, of Shrewsbury; and 10 grandchildren: Joshua Stanley; Alison, Kylie, Hailey and Tori Hull; Tyler Hull; Matthew Jr. and Mary Hull; and Charlotte and Sean Green; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his only brother, Thaddeus "Ted" Hull, of Salem. Family and friends are invited to gather for visiting hours on Monday, October 18th from 5 to 7 pm in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center.
