Born in New York City, Queens, New York, on January 11, 1914 he was the son of the late Jacob W. and Maude (Romer) Hack. During World War II, he served as a Sergeant in the 924th Engineer Aviation Regiment in the U.S. Army. He was an aerial photo topographer, constructing various types of maps and aeronautical charts. He specialized in camouflage and also conducted duties as regiment historian. For many years, prior to his retirement, Mr. Hack worked as Art Director for McCall's Patterns in New York City. Previously, before the war, he worked in the advertising industry as an ad layout artist in New York City for J. C. Penney Co., Abraham & Strauss, and the Namm Store. After the war, he was Assistant Art Director at Saks Fifth Avenue and then became Art Director at I. Miller & Sons Shoe Company on 5th Avenue in New York. During the early 1950's, while at I. Miller, he had the occasion to hire the then-unknown-artist Andy Warhol as a freelancer. He worked independently for a number of years before joining McCall's Patterns. He was a member of the Art Directors Club in Manhattan. During his lifetime, Mr. Hack pursued his passion for art by producing a large body of artwork. Most of his paintings were watercolors, although he worked in pastels and other media. Printmaking using wood cuts and etchings was also a specialty for him. Later in retirement, he pursued calligraphy as well. A talented artist, he exhibited his works at several art shows and galleries in New York and Connecticut, and won numerous awards for his paintings from many different organizations. A longtime resident of Tarrytown, New York, he was a devoted volunteer at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, NY during his retirement.
