Obituary

Robert S. Flannery, 101, longtime resident of Concord, MA and Brookline, NH died peacefully at the VA Medical Center in Manchester, New Hampshire on June 14, 2011 following a brief illness. He was born on July 23, 1909 in Concord, Massachusetts, the first born son of the late Stephen and Mary Mabel Flannery. Mr. Flannery graduated from Concord High School in 1927 and attended the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. At the age of 100, Mr. Flannery received an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering Technology Degree from Wentworth that he proudly cherished. Mr. Flannery was a distinguished World War II Veteran of the United States Navy Seabees and Purple Heart recipient. He was also a veteran of the United States Army Field Artillery, having begun his military career in 1928 at the age of seventeen. Mr. Flannery then enjoyed a career as a stone mason in Concord, MA until his retirement to Brookline, NH in 1978 where he lived independently for the past 33 years and enjoyed visiting local quarries, working on his home, and going out to eat. He is survived by his brother, Ralph Flannery and his wife Connie of Lincoln, MA and many nieces, nephews and good friends. He was predeceased by his siblings, Richard, Lawrence, Donald, William, Walter, Leonard, Margaret Britt and Mary Bufton. The Flannery family is Concord's most served family during WWII. Father Peter Connolly, St. Benedict Abbey, Harvard, Massachusetts will officiate at the prayer service on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 10 AM on Author's Ridge at the family gravesite. Officers of the United States Navy will present military honors. Concord's flag will fly at half staff in honor of Bobby's service to his country in the United States Navy Seabees.
