Obituary

Robert L. Carter, 94, a lifelong Concord resident and the recipient of Concord's Honored Citizen Award for 1994, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at The Commons in Lincoln. Born in Concord on June 28, 1922, he was the devoted son of the late Robert W. and Winifred (French) Carter. He graduated with Concord High School's class of 1940, and attended Burdett College in Boston until 1942. He also studied at Bloomsburg State College in Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania State University, at which time he was accepted in the U.S. Navy's V-12 program for Officers in training. During World War II, he served in the Navy aboard the USS Frederick Funston (APA-89), performing military service in Sicily, Saipan, and Guam. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Mr. Carter continued his education at Northeastern University in Boston and received his Bachelors degree in 1960. From 1943 until 1994, he was the proud owner of Carter Furniture Company in West Concord, a business that he operated along with his late mother. Active in local civic affairs, Mr. Carter formerly held a seat on the Board of Directors for the Concord Taxpayers Association, was past President of the Concord Lions Club, a member of Concord Retired Men's Club, served on the Town Managers Committee at Harvey Wheeler Community Center, and a former board member of the Concord Museum and the Concord Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Board of Directors of the New England Grenfell Association, was a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Course, a member of the James J. Mansfield American Legion Post in Concord, and was an active member of the New England and National Furniture Dealers Association. He was a former Deacon, choir member, and Sunday School Teacher at West Concord Union Church, and since 1984, has been a choir member and a former Church Council member at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sudbury. He also belonged to several singing groups in the Concord area and was on stage with the Concord Players. Survivors include many cousins, including Judith Funkhouser of Midlothian, VA, Dorothy Robinson of West Yarmouth,MA, Donald E. Snow of Buxton, ME, Phyllis McCarter of Stoughton, MA, Jean Bowering of Ithica, NY, Prue Stelling of Oneanta, NY, and Claire Thomas of Goshen, CT. Relatives and friends are invited to his memorial service on Saturday, February 25th at 11 am in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 16 Great Road, Sudbury. At the family's request, there are no funeral home visiting hours. A private burial service with military honors will be at Glenwood Cemetery in Maynard. Concord's Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Saturday, February 25th in honor of Mr. Carter's service to his country during World War II, and for being selected as the Town of Concord's Honored Citizen in 1994.
