Robert Francis Carmichael Sr.,86, of Concord, died Saturday August 1, 2015. He was the beloved husband of 60 years of Philomena M. (Kiley) Carmichael.
Born in Cambridge on June 8, 1929 he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Louise (Barrett) Carmichael. He grew up in Allston, and graduated from Boston College High School in 1947 and from Boston College in 1951.
He served in the U.S. Navy on the aircraft carrier, USS Wasp, from 1951 to 1953.
Mr. Carmichael retired in 1995 from International Harvester, after 43 years with the company.
A resident of Concord since 1970, he was a long time Emerson Hospital volunteer, a longtime volunteer at Lazarus House in Lawrence, and was active as a communicant, lector and Eucharistic minister at the former Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in West Concord and later in Holy Family Parish in Concord.
He also was an avid gardener, skier and sailor.
In addition to his wife Philomena, he is survived by his son, Robert F. Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Needham, his daughter Janet M. Ciummei and her husband, Richard, of Acton, his son Brian T. and his wife, Carol, of Andover, and his son, John P. and his wife, Debra, of North Attleboro; twelve grandchildren, Megan, Kristin, Jessica, Nicole, Caroline, Allison, Michael, Elizabeth, Sarah, Alyse, Harrison and Conor; three great grandchildren, Brendan, Jack and Kate; and two brothers, Raymond T. of Arlington and Leonard B. of Natick. He also was the brother of the late Virginia F. Kyle.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 5th from the Dee Funeral Home , 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 9 am followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center at 10 am.
Interment will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord.
Visiting hours will be on Tuesday August 4th from 4 to 8 pm..
Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff on Wednesday August 5th in recognition of Mr. Carmichael's service to his country during the Korean Conflict.
