Obituary

Robert G. Bower, 81, of Concord, died on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Emerson Hospital in Concord following a brief illness. For 60 years, he was the loving husband of Sally A. (Shaw) Bower. He was born in Methuen on June 24, 1936, the son of the late Herbert and Eva (Robillard) Bower. He remained a Methuen native, and graduated from the town's high school with the class of 1954. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Bower enlisted with the United States Air Force where he honorably served his country during the Korean War as Airman First Class. Prior to his discharge from the military in 1958, he met the love of his life, Sally Shaw, at Otis Air Force Base in Hyannis. They began their family and have made Concord their home since July of 1966. Mr. Bower was an accomplished Mechanical Engineer, with a career spanning several decades at corporations including Philco, Honeywell, and Avery Dennison. He volunteered for the Concord Boy Scouts, and was an active member of the Civil Air Patrol and the Concord Rod & Gun Club. His military service included being part of a Flight Crew, which instilled his love for recreational flying as a Private Pilot. He was an avid outdoorsman with a talent for gardening and a keen interest in birds. A motorcycle and car enthusiast, he loved Volkswagen Rabbits and purchased three for his own personal collection. His handyman skills were incredible and will be missed. Everyone who knew Mr. Bower knew that they could count on him to fix anything that needed a proper fixing. In addition to his wife, he leaves behind four children, Robert S. Bower and his fiancé Laura Plourde of Norwood, James W. Bower of Concord, Philip D. Bower and his wife Anne of Littleton, and Sarah J. Briones of Littleton. He was the beloved and proud grandfather of Megan A. Bower, Rachel E. Briones, Hannah R. Bower, Richard J. "RJ" Briones, and Tyler R. Briones. He is survived by his dear brother Charles H. Bower and his wife Alice of Middleboro, and his sister Sally Rousseau. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Tuesday, August 1st from 5 to 8 pm in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. His memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 2nd at 11 am in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home, where representatives of the U.S. Air Force will render military honors. A reception will immediately follow. Concord's Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Wednesday, August 2nd in honor of Mr. Bower's faithful military service to his country. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 1661 Worcester Rd., Suite 301, Framingham, MA 01701 (www.lung.org). Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
