Robert A. Bolton, Sr. passed away in Concord on June 26, 2022, after a period of failing health, at the age of 91.
Bob was born on June 1, 1931, the son of William and Rachel (Phelan) Bolton. He grew up in Cambridge and spent many happy summers in Springvale, Maine at the home of his Uncle Oscar and Aunt Edith where he tended a huge vegetable garden, fished and explored. He attended Morse Grammar School and graduated from Cambridge High & Latin School in 1949.
Bob developed an early love of aviation and became a licensed pilot in his teens. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force. He was selected for Officer Candidate School, completed pilot training and was assigned to the Strategic Air Command. After leaving active duty with the US Air Force in 1956 he continued to fly with the NH Air National Guard until 1962 leaving as a Major.
Upon leaving the Air Force in 1956, Bob enrolled in Boston University School of Management. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1960 and joined Haskins & Sells. He received the Silver Medal in the CPA exam of November 1960. He subsequently went into private practice first as Hall & Bolton and then as Robert A. Bolton CPA, retiring at 80.
He was a lifelong Unitarian. Growing up, he attended the Arlington Street Church in Boston and later was an active member of the Medfield, Concord and Keene, NH congregations.
Bob married Nancy Lois Higgins of Natick, MA in 1958. They raised their family in Medfield and Concord. Later they moved to the Monadnock Region and lived in Peterborough and Keene, NH. The circle was completed when they moved back to Cambridge in 2005.
Bob was a lover of nature and the outdoors and shared his enthusiasm with his family. Weekends and vacations were often spent camping, hiking, fishing, skiing, canoeing, kayaking or backpacking. Labrador, Baxter State Park and Prince Edward Island were favorite destinations.
Bob leaves his beloved wife of 64 years, Nancy L. Bolton, his daughter Elizabeth A. Bolton of Littleton and sons R. Andrew Bolton, Jr. of Cambridge and Theodore M. Bolton of Boston. He was predeceased by his parents and by his brother William R. Bolton. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a period of visitation in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord, MA on Sunday, July 10th from 3 to 4 pm, concluding with a time of remembrance beginning at 4 pm.
