Richard C. Sawyer, 86, of Acton, formerly of Concord, died Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Edith Nourse Rogers Veterans Administration Hospital in Bedford. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy A. (Bowse) Sawyer.
Born in Lowell on June 7, 1923, he was the son of the late Ralph M. and Maude A. (Moore) Sawyer. He attended Concord and Lexington public schools, Boston parochial schools and Northeastern University in Boston.
During World War II, he served as a Private in the U. S. Army. He is the survivor of five major campaigns and was a member of the Anzio Beachhead Association.
For many years, prior to his retirement, Mr. Sawyer was a design draftsman at Lincoln Lab, MIT.
An Acton resident for 50 years, he volunteered as a Boy Scout leader and for the Explorer Post #7 in Acton. He was an avid reader, enjoyed poetry, was a nature enthusiast, bird watcher and enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing in New Hampshire all year round. He had a passion for art and enjoyed drawing.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy, he is survived by 2 daughters, Dorothy Bourgeois of Phoenix, Arizona and Deborah L. Sawyer of Acton. 2 sons, Ronald C. Sawyer of Natick and Kevin F. Sawyer and his wife Pamela of Acton. 1 sister, Virginia Couturier of Chelmsford, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Richard W. Sawyer.
Funeral was held on Thursday, April 15th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 9 AM followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center at 10 AM. Burial was in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord where officers of the U. S. Army will present military honors.
Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home were on Wednesday, April 14th from 4 to 7 PM.
Concord's town flag will be at half-staff on Thursday in recognition of Mr. Sawyer's service to his country during World War II.
