Obituary

On December 22, 2020, Richard Paglia Sr. passed away at the age of 82 surrounded by his devoted wife and family in the home he designed and had built 54 years ago in Carlisle, Massachusetts. Richard was born on September 3, 1938 to Augustus and Josephine Paglia. He was raised in the North End of Boston and attended St Mary's Grammar School and Boston College High School. He volunteered for the United States Air Force Reserves in 1960 and served through 1966. He received his degree from Northeastern University in mechanical engineering in 1967 and years later, in 1983, furthered his engineering studies at Boston University. After a year at Raytheon Corporation he began his career at Polaroid Corporation where he worked for 38 years. During his time at Polaroid he was granted 22 patents for his extensive design work with Dr. Edwin Land on the SX-70 camera. In 8th grade, while serving as an altar boy at St. Mary's parish in the North End, one of the priests organized a social club for the altar boys with girls from Julie Billiart High School. Through these gatherings Richard met the love of his life, Marie Ciulla. Married almost 60 years, they raised four children in Carlisle where he coached many of his children's sports teams. As an avid sports fan, attending the sporting events of his children, and then his grandchildren, was one of his greatest pleasures. Upon retirement, Richard and Marie built a summerhouse where the family gathered in Falmouth MA. At their summer home, Richard enjoyed clamming, boating and kayaking, but most of all, spending time down at the bay with his grandchildren. An inseparable couple, in retirement they also traveled through Europe, with multiple trips to Italy. Richard had a passion and skill for fixing, building and puttering. He was adept at anything he decided to tackle, often getting Marie involved in the project as his assistant, whether she liked it or not. As a wonderful and engaged grandfather, he spent many hours in his basement with his grandchildren working on various projects. In later years, he volunteered at the Bedford Council on Aging Fix-It shop. A lifelong learner interested in everything, he was constantly reading. The selections on his shelf ranged from books on American history to bandsaw and small machine handbooks. He was known for his love of family, his dry sense of humor, his youthful handsomeness and as a maker of sleek paper airplanes. Richard was predeceased by his father and mother. He is survived by his wife Marie and his four children, Celeste and her husband Leo McGahan of Middletown RI, Richard Jr. and his wife Leah of Westford, Jodi Dolan of Newburyport, and Paul and his wife Roberta of Needham. His three brothers; Angelo and wife Mary, Carmine, and Joseph and wife Rita, survive Richard. He is also survived by his devoted sister-in-law, Celeste DeAngelis, 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Richard's family gathered for a private funeral Mass on Thursday, December 24th at St. Irene Parish in Carlisle, where Richard was a faithful parishioner. Burial followed at Green Cemetery in Carlisle. Click play below to watch the replay. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to St. Irene Parish, 181 East Street, Carlisle MA, 01741.
