John Richard O'Neil, 86, of Concord died Friday December 16, 2011 in Concord. He was the husband of 62 years of Constance E. (Payne) O'Neil. Born in Boston on August 16, 1925 he was the son of the late Edward P. and Muriel C. (Bailey) O'Neil. He attended Boston schools and came to Concord in 1935 at the age of ten. Mr. O'Neil was a 1943 graduate of Concord High School, where he Co-captained the 1942 varsity football team and also lettered in basketball. In 1963,he received an Electrical Engineering degree from Northeastern University. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy in the Pacific theatre of operations aboard the USS Alaska. He retired in 1987 as Superintendent of the Town of Concord Light Department after over 37 years of employment. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Maynard Country Club and also was a Life member of the Concord Rod and Gun Club. For over twenty years he served the Town of Concord as a Call Firefighter. In addition to his wife Connie, survivors include his children, Michael P. and his wife Teresa of Maynard, John R. Jr. of Leominster, Susan E. O'Donnell and her husband Kenneth of Littleton, Jane F. of Berlin and Margaret M. Conway and her husband Michael of Webster, NH., his grandchildren, Richard J. and Molly E. of Maynard, Caitlin M. of Milford, CT, Courtney M. of Waldorf, MD, Michael J. O'Donnell and his wife Jessica , Matthew R. and Rebecca E. O'Donnell, all of Littleton and Ian R. Mills of Berlin, and his great-grandchildren, Michael Joseph O'Donnell Jr. and Jacqueline O'Donnell. He was also the father of the late Kathleen M. O'Neil and brother of the late Robert and Edward P. O'Neil Jr.
Cemetery:
Interment with military honors will follow in the family burial plot in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord. Concord's town flag will fly at half staff on Thursday in recognition of Mr. O'Neil's service to his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
Visitation:
Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be held on Wednesday December 21st from 4 to 8 pm.
Service:
Funeral will be held Thursday December 22nd from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 10 am followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square,, Concord Center at 11 am.
