Obituary

Richard McAvinnie passed away in Concord on February 17, 2021. He was born in Somerville in December 1934. He lived in a triple-decker in Somerville with his parents Patrick and Clara, and his Aunt Sarah. As a boy, Richard had bright red hair. He attended The Little Flower School (St. Benedict's Parish). He was top of the class at Matignon High School, winning the book award all four years. He recalled watching the atomic bomb trial with his father. After High School, he attended M.I.T and joined the Air Force ROTC. He was stationed in Colorado and Washington, D.C. Richard spent many years working as an engineer at Thermo Electron Corporation, where he enjoyed his work and his colleagues. Richard loved art, theatre, and music, and reading. For many years he had season tickets to the A.R.T., the Huntington Theatre, the Boston Ballet, and the Boston Symphony. He frequently visited the Museum of Fine Arts and the Gardner Museum. He often traveled to New York City to see shows and visit museums. In 2009 he fulfilled his dream of traveling to England, where he enjoyed theatre productions and visiting museums. He was introduced to the Browning Society by English friends, joined the Boston chapter, and attended its meetings for many years. Richard moved from Cambridge to Concord ten years ago to be closer to his second cousins, Christopher Fielding and Pamela Fielding Goar. He was fondly known as "Uncle Richard", and never missed a family birthday or holiday party until social distancing restrictions prevented him from doing so. He will be greatly missed by Chris Fielding and Susan Bacher, and their children, Pason and Samantha, of Carlisle; Pamela Fielding Goar and Dudley Goar and their children, James and May, of Concord; and Kimberly O'Connell (nee Fielding) Jim O'Connell, and their son, Owen, of Portland, Maine. Services will be private. Concord's Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Wednesday, February 24th in recognition of Richard's honorable service in the United States Air Force. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
