Richard J. LaVigne, Jr., of Concord, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, at MGH Brigham Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved son of the late Peggy (Flynn) LaVigne and Dr. Richard J. LaVigne, and was originally from Groton, Massachusetts, where he grew up enjoying many years with exceptional friends in a uniquely strong and close-knit community.
Richard is survived by his sister, Meg LaVigne of Concord, and his three brothers: Paul of Concord; Peter and his wife Trudie of Milton, Massachusetts; and Michael and his wife Lisa White of Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is also survived by his nieces, Susannah Gursky and her husband, Evan of Orlando, Florida, and Dr. Annie LaVigne and her husband David Cholewczynski of Ellicott City, Maryland.
Richard graduated from Xavier High School in Concord, Massachusetts, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1972. During his studies, he spent a year in Rome at the Jesuit University, an experience he cherished deeply. He had a lifelong love of writing, was an accomplished artist and woodcarver, and found great fulfillment in his work. In 2008, Richard joined a group of volunteers for a “Mission To Mississippi,” building eight homes for residents living in trailers after being displaced by the largest natural disaster in U.S. history, Hurricane Katrina.
The owner of LaVigne Painters, Richard partnered with clients throughout the Boston area. He took immense pride in his craft, restoring and enhancing beautiful homes through his work. He deeply valued the relationships he built with his clients over the years.
Richard and his siblings were well known for their annual Halloween parties under the banner of the “Midnight Painters and Carpenters.” Held in warehouses in Boston’s South End, these gatherings brought together friends and family for evenings filled with live rock bands, imaginative costumes, and lasting memories.
Richard had a deep love for his family, his rescued cat Boo, Holy Cross, Italian food and golf. He was also guided by a strong commitment to truth and integrity in all aspects of his life.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held September 19th at his home in Concord. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Richard J. LaVigne, M.D. Scholarship Fund in memory of Richard J. LaVigne, Jr. at the College of the Holy Cross, 1 Worcester Street, Worcester, Massachusetts 01610 or online at www.holycross.edu/giving.
